Hiking
The U.S. Forest Service and local Ouray Trail Group work together to maintain more than 60 incredible hiking trails in the immediate area, from easy, short hikes, to longer more difficult hiking trails, to even more technical mountaineering.
From the short walk to Cascade Falls or following the meandering footpath of the Portland Trail, both excellent first-time introductions to area hiking, to the challenging Horsethief/Bear Creek Loop Trail, the San Juan region has something for hikers of all interests and abilities.
Whatever your hike, though, returning to relax your tired muscles in the 108-degree mineral hot springs at the Box Canyon Lodge is truly a welcome relief.
A complete list, detailed descriptions, difficulty ratings and
current conditions of all trails in the area can be found at the
Ouray Trail Group website, www.ouraytrails.org.
Several hiking books by Kelvin Kent, outlining local hikes, are
also available. Two of these are Ouray Hiking Guide, Favorite Trails
Of Ouray, Colorado, and Trails Less Traveled, 27 Adventurous Hikes
Out of Ouray Colorado.
