skijoringposter.jpgThe sport of Ski Joring is gaining popularity as a high adrenaline winter sport which involves a cowboy, a horse, and a skier. Racers and riders alike depend on the speed and capability of their entire team, as the horse races an obstacle course through the snow, pulling an expert skier who is gathering points as he navigates jums and challenges at high speed. The rider is taxed as he guides his mount in sometimes treacherous conditions to greater speed, while at the same time ensuring the safety of the hitchhiker on skis behind them.

In 1949, the city of Leadville, Colorado became the home of the new sport of Skijoring. through the years, the sport gained inpopularity, until the mid 1980’s, when it seemed interest had dissapeared. In the mid 1990’s, there was a revival in interest, with the perserverance of a few avid participants in the sport. Through thier efforts and energy, the North American Ski Joring Association was born, and continues to grow, most recently with the addition of Ridgway, Colorado.

skijoring2.jpgThrough the hard work and generous suppport of last years Souther Division Sport Champion Rider, Richard Weber III, the second race in the series will take place in Ridgway, Colorado on January 7 and 8, 2017. The purse is not small at $20,000.00, plus 100% of all entry fees, although, that’s not why they do it. “It’s not a sport you will get rich doing, it is the challenge we are there for”, says the seven year veteran rider. The Southern Circuit of Skijoring includes events in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico and South Dakota, each boasting lucrative prizes with awards and recognition for those top performers at the end of the year.
