The mountains surrounding Ouray are home to some of the finest alpine mountaineering and rock climbing routes in all of Colorado. The San Juan Mountain Range is the largest group of mountains in Colorado and remains virtually pristine when compared to other heavily used areas on the Front Range. The San Juan’s rugged topography creates a landscape of jagged peaks and sweeping alpine basins that beckons to all adventurers who see them.

Several of Colorado’s “Fourteeners” are near Ouray, the nearest peak is Mt. Sneffels.

Mt. Sneffels

Come and see for yourself that climbing in the San Juans is the ultimate experience and then, following up with a relaxing and therapeutic soak in the 108-degree mineral hot springs afterward, you’ll be ready for another day in these magnificent mountains.

If you are interested in instruction or guiding for this activity, contact San Juan Mountain Guides (800-642-5389).

For information on technical hikes and climbs, a complete list, detailed descriptions, difficulty ratings and current conditions of all trails in the area can be found at the Ouray Trail Group website, www.ouraytrails.org. Several hiking books by Kelvin Kent, outlining local hikes, are also available. Two of these are Ouray Hiking Guide, Favorite Trails Of Ouray, Colorado, and Trails Less Traveled, 27 Adventurous Hikes Out of Ouray Colorado.
