You couldn’t ask for a more perfect day to go horseback riding! The sun was shining, and it was a beautiful 76 degrees out. I decided there was no better time to go on adventure! I called Action Adventure Trail Rides, and Christine took my reservation over the phone. She made me feel very comfortable about not being an avid rider, and I began to get excited.

When I arrived, a calm and knowledgeable cowboy named Eric introduced me to my horse Breego. After a rundown of directions from Eric, we were on the way!

We went on the two hour “Buckaroo Ride”.  The views of the San Juan’s were utterly breathtaking. Breego and I followed Eric on his horse Hutchinson across Cutler Creek and down to a spectacular waterfall for a quick photo shoot.

At the base camp you are surrounded by Scrub Oaks and red dirt. So, it is just amazing to see the transition of foliage as you continue to climb through the mountains. You pass by wild honeysuckle bushes, columbines, and mountain iris to name a few.

Eric was so knowledgeable not only about horses, but the surrounding area. With a 360 degree view of Ouray, it really puts the history of Ouray into perspective. Especially when you are riding past old abandoned mines and there is raw copper ore still visible in the tailings.

If you want my honest opinion about my experience, I would give it a 10/10 with the only negative being that your legs will feel it the next day.

Action Adventure Trail Rides is located a few miles outside of Ouray, on County Road 14A. All of their horses are bred and raised at their ranch in Ouray County, and it shows. With rides ranging from the one hour “Wrangler Ride” to overnight trips, there is something for everyone eager to experience the high country on horseback. Give them a call, and let these knowledgeable folks help create your next adventure in Ouray!
