Weehawken Creative Arts and Ridgway Chautauqua Society (the Sherbino) have worked together this winter to create a new joint fundraiser event and created the Ridgway 1K Rally Thru the Alley Fun Run. “This fun and lighthearted event is for the “art-lete” in all of us,” says Executive Director Ashley King.
Beginning at Weehawken Ridgway at the Old Schoolhouse Building (1075 Sherman St) and ending at Ridgway Hartwell Town Park, this event is .62 miles that traverses the alleyways of Ridgway, taking participants to the park and the start of the Love Your Valley Festival.
“Ridgway Alleys are known for their hidden art and poems, and that made them the perfect locale for a run for the arts,” says King, “We also wanted to find a way to tie in to the community as a whole and having it end at Love Your Valley Festival, which helps fund the Ridgway Summer Concert Series, seemed like a perfect fit.”
To create the concept and all the details, board members from both non-profit organizations joined together to brainstorm. Kindred Collective was brought-in to help with concept and design work. The end result was the 1K with FIVE aid stations provided by local business sponsors, youth art and theatre events at the end of the event, contests and awards, and the new “Art-vark” arts mascot to be debuted and present at the event. The committee also reached out to the Town of Ridgway to coordinate the event and to be able to offer the awards ceremony during the Love Your Valley Festival. There will be awards for categories including “Most Creative Mode of Ambulation” and “Best Carbo-Loading On Course”, as well as Best Solo Adult, Solo Youth and Group Costumes.
Since the announcement of the event, they have brought in numerous sponsors, and have almost 100 participants already registered. Registration is still open online at $30 for adults and $15 for students. Registration includes commemorative t-shirt and sticker as well as fun stations and treats along the course. On-site registration will be available as well, beginning at 12:00 pm on May 11, with a $5 increase for each category. They are also offering a “sleep-in” option, for those who can’t make it to the event itself. That option is $50 and includes a t-shirt and sticker and a discounted entry to Love Your Valley Festival.
