This year, the Ouray Elks is holding their 50th Annual Easter Egg Hunt at Hartwell Park in Ridgway, starting at 2:00pm on Easter Sunday. Children will be divided into age groups – 0 to 3, 4 to 6, 7 to 9, and 10 to 12, and will gather their treaures from designated search areas. Everyone is invited to participate in this free community event. With over a thousand eggs, including special “Golden Eggs”, filled with a silver dollar, there will be plenty of eggs for everyone!
Springtime in Ouray County is nothing if not unpredictable. You can see weather of almost every variety before noon – there might be snow on the ground in the morning, and by 10am the sun has melted it all away. In another moment, clouds roll on by and a rainstorm makes the grass green before sunshine and wind, followed by another snow storm….and on, and on. Layers are not a light suggestion, but a requirement.
It is kind of awesome. Only a few times has there been too much snow on the ground for the Easter Bunny and all of his helpers from the Ouray Elks Lodge to set up a hunt in the park. Of course, a little snow never stopped the Easter Bunny! On those few occasions, the hunt just goes inside the Ouray Elks Lodge, a beautiful historic building filled with wonderful hiding places for colorful eggs.
