The Uncompahgre Watershed Partnership is a 501(c)(3) organization that works to protect the economic, natural and scenic values of the Upper Uncompahgre River Watershed in southwest Colorado. One of the best ways to protect is through sharing knowledge in a fun and different way. In partnership with the Ouray County Historical Society, a fascinating back country tour of the Red Mountain Mining District definitely serves this purpose.

After meeting at the Ouray Visitor Center, 1230 Main St., Ouray, CO, everyone will carpool to County Road 31, located off of Highway 550 (the Million Dollar Highway), and don their  snowshoes, cross country or touring gear for a moderate trek up to the Yankee Girl Mine. The Yankee Girl is considered to be the one of the most famous silver mines in the US, and the source of the mining boom in the Red Mountain Mining District.

Once at the mine, enjoy warm drinks and cookies to accompany your packed lunch as your guide tells all about the rich mining history of the San Juans. With a sense of wonder at the resilience of the people who once worked these mines through all of the seasons, the group will return to the modern world. By 2:30 pm, back in Ouray, a warm soak in one of our all natural hot springs tubs at the Box Canyon Lodge is an ideal way to relax before venturing into town for dinner.

In addition to snowshoes, cross country or touring gear, be sure to bring appropriate clothing & accessories to keep you comfy & happy, lunch, water, sunscreen, friends, kids, but please leave your furry friends at home. This guided tour does require registration and signed releases from all who attend.  A  $25 donation ($15 for children 14 & under) is requested to support our organizations, UWP & OCHS (please bring on day of tour), and don’t forget, space is limited, so be sure to sign up today!
